My father was a roofer. His spine must have been made of steel because he spent eight hours a day hunched over shingles for 40 years and never complained about it. His skin was permanently tan and it seemed like he gained his sustenance not from food and water but from hard work.
My father’s roofing was successful in our small town. People knew and respected him. He did a lot of favors for people and often charged people only his costs for the materials if they were low on cash. Somehow we did alright. I believe karma brought back to us what my father gave away as charity.
All I ever wanted was to be just like my dad. When I was a teenager he would let me work with him in the summers. I sweated alongside him through the hot days, ripping old shingles from the rooftops and holding the new sheets in place as my father nailed them down.
I figured I’d take over the family business, but when I went off to college, I discovered I had a knack for business and decided to pursue that route. When my dad took a bad fall from a roof, my mother made him quit the business. My younger brother took over the labor and I handled the business, growing his company state-wide.
Though I now do business, I sometimes jump on projects with my brother just to feel adrenaline that comes with hard work and sweat. I created Recover Roofing to help everyday people know what a roofing project entails and empower them, if they feel up to it, to tackle their own roofing projects.
