A clogged drain is bound to happen at one point or another. Instead of using caustic chemicals, consider using a few alternative methods of unclogging your drains. Commercial drain cleaners contain some dangerous chemicals that can affect your health if swallowed or inhaled too much. Fortunately, you can use a few effective ways to clean out your drain and keep them clean.

Air Cleaners

Whether your bathroom tub or sink is clogged, you can use the power of air to get to the source of the problem. Compressed air cleaners can cut through balls of hair or debris that is stopping the water from traveling down smoothly. They are designed to seal around the drain and shoot of steam of air that will force through any clog.

You can purchase these air cleaners at your local hardware store and look like 16 to 18 inch tubes. A great thing about these air cleaners is that they can be reused again and again; you don’t have to throw them out after one use. Just make sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions for best results.

Home Made Cleaner

You can also prepare a homemade cleaner that can be just as effective as a commercial drain cleaner. There are several natural ingredients that pack a punch when it comes to cleaning power. Baking soda and vinegar are excellent agents since they create air bubbles that expand down the pipes, eventually pushing the blockages out of the way.

Simply add 1/2 pound of baking soda and 2 cups white vinegar to 1 gallon of warm water. Stir vigorously before pouring it down the drain. Allow the solution to sit for at least 1 hour before opening the tap and allowing hot water to flow through.

Yogurt Dissolvers

Yes, you can even harness the power of yogurt to help unclog your drain and keep it unclogged. Yogurt is rich in probiotics and enzymes that work will to break down the gunk and fats that can clog just about any drain. They literally digest the debris if applied down the drain and left overnight.

There are yogurt-based dissolvers on the market that you can purchase at your local hardware store. You can also use fresh, plain yogurt. Add about 1 cup of yogurt down the drain and let it sit for at least 6 hours before allowing hot water to run down the drain.
